![]() Your new Phaidon book just came out, and looking at its sleek, elegant black cover, you can immediately see your sensibility. Goldstein sat down with Marino to discuss the arc of his life’s work. To celebrate the publication of Phaidon’s Peter Marino: Art Architecture, the definitive tome surveying his commissioned art projects, Artspace editor-in-chief Andrew M. ![]() ![]() He has also returned to his roots, making sui generis artworks of his own. Today arguably enjoying the pinnacle of his career, Marino is full of ambitious plans and thoughts about his legacy. Tomilson Hill, the vice chairman of the Blackstone Group. In addition to his commercial buildings, Marino is working on a slew of private projects, including a home on top of a mountain in Lebanon and several in the Hamptons and elsewhere for bankers at Goldman Sachs and Safra Bank, and one client he describes as “a rogue bond trader in Mexico.” (“You really do need money to build nowadays,” Marino says.) But one project in particular marries the architect’s themes of art and design: a Chelsea building for the developer and collector Michael Shvo that will feature private residences, a new Lehmann Maupin gallery, and the new art foundation being founded by J. There is work by Anselm Kiefer (Marino has 12 in his Aspen home), Richard Prince (“I’m very close to Richard because we’re born three days apart”), Antoine Poncet, Thomas Struth, Johan Creten, Arman, Joel Morrison, Nancy Grossman, Vik Muniz, Georg Baselitz, Donald Moffett, Rudolf Stingel, Cy Twombly, Sarah Charlesworth, Damien Hirst, Anthony Pearson, Dan Colen, and Francesco Clemente, to name a few. (A photograph of his daughter, taken by Steven Meisel, was mixed among them on a recent afternoon.) A fuller scope of his taste-which was celebrated in a show of his collection at the Bass Museum in 2015-can be be absorbed around the office. Around his firm’s office, art is clearly the base note of creativity.Ĭarved African tribal sculptures (“my absolute favorite,” he says) stand on plinths around his private office like sentinels Robert Mapplethorpe photographs line his walls, a small fraction of his 142-piece collection of the photographer, the world’s largest in private hands. Marino has made contemporary art the centerpiece of his architectural approach from the beginning of his career, when he got his start doing commissions for Andy Warhol and his extraordinary circle of creatives and luxury titans, and today few of his projects conclude without the presence of a showstopping piece of art that he commissioned for the site. Black in every permutation, white, and heavy metal are his signatures. Famously clad in a black leather uniform of his own design, with silver skull and claw rings clattering on his fingers, the architect is remarkable muscled for a man in his late 60s, with the biceps of a Tom of Finland pinup and the close-cropped mohawk of a biker-gang capo. Marino himself, in person, reflects something else: their brute commercial power. Sleek, near-Platonic ideals of refinement, these stores convey the fashion companies’ elegant brands. ![]() He has similar architectural dominance of Rodeo Drive, New Bond Street, Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui, and other global luxury meccas. For visitors who are curious to see the finished projects, they have only to walk a block south to 57th Street, where seven of the poshest stores- Fendi, Hublot, Louis Vuitton, etc.-are Marino’s handiwork. The floors are scattered with swatches of luxurious materials, from marble to high-gloss leather, all possible accoutrements to his famously sleek designs. There are “war rooms” scattered around the duplex office space dedicated to his different clients one, empaneled in quilted black, is dedicated to a new Chanel flagship another is for Dior a third is devoted to La Samaritaine, the venerable Paris department store Marino is rehabbing in “a big restoration, and that’s really fun,” he says. On the 36th floor of a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper, the architect Peter Marino marshals dozens of designers to carry out some of the most luxe building projects the world has to offer.

With the use of heated water, water-soluble flux comes straight off, no need for alcohol. An advantage it does have over rosin is that it’s far easier to clean. Water-soluble flux is suitable for use in electronics soldering, as it combines less-aggressive acids with water and isopropyl alcohol, making it a safe alternative to rosin. Do not use plumbing flux instead of electronics flux. ![]() Electronics soldering is a more delicate process than plumbing soldering, and requires a flux that is far less aggressive. While it may be more effective at removing oxides, it is too effective in terms of electronics, and could easily destroy a printed circuit board (PCB). Plumbing flux is far more corrosive than electronics flux, and is used to remove oxides on a much larger scale. A process called tinning also has its own type of flux, but are these suitable for electronics? Are they interchangeable between the different metals and processes?Įlectronic soldering needs a certain amount of precision, and with the amount of different components on a circuit board, some easily liable to damage, it is very important you use the correct type of flux. Whether using the flux for a circuit board or surface mount technology (SMT), rosin is the best type to ensure high-quality joints in both.Ĭan You Use Other Types of Flux on Electronics?įlux is not just used in electronic soldering, but also in plumbing, which uses different types of flux, such as water-soluble flux. It still needs cleaning off after use, as it can pose a risk of corrosion, but it’s the best in terms of quality of soldering, and low acidic levels. Generally speaking, the best type of solder to use when soldering electronics is rosin, as it’s the easiest to use, with the least risk to damaging the electronic. This is due to the fact that it uses less powerful chemicals, which makes the window for soldering smaller, and the process more difficult. However, the reason easy clean flux does not damage is due to its reduced potency, and therefore is more difficult to yield similar results when using the other fluxes. Using Easy Clean FluxĮasy clean flux’s name would rightly suggest that this type of flux is easily removed after soldering, meaning you don’t have the same issues as you would with rosin or liquid flux, where the remains can damage the electronics. The more you contain the use of liquid flux, the better. Liquid flux needs to be cleaned off after use, as it is more corrosive than rosin. Its fluidity is also a downside, as liquid flux can easily flow to areas of a circuit board you don’t want it to. However, it cools down quickly, which gives less time to solder. Due to its fluidity, liquid flux can easily be applied and dabbed onto the area that needs soldering. ![]() Liquid fluxes are a worthy alternative to rosin flux, as they rid the metal of oxides more efficiently. The removal process can be a little difficult, and needs alcohol to properly clean. However, if the electronic is prone to becoming hot, the rosin could do damage, which is why it is best to remove it after soldering. One of rosin’s main benefits is that is quickly rids the metal of oxides, and it is only acidic in liquid form, therefore safe to leave on the electronic when it has cooled. Rosin in one of the oldest, and most reliable, fluxes. Rosin based flux is highly recommended for all electronics soldering needs, but easy clean and liquid are, easier to clean and remove after soldering. ![]() Mainly, the choice between the three comes down to personal preference, and which is advised for beginners. Rosin, liquid and easy clean flux are three of the main types of electronics flux. It is important to use the correct flux, otherwise, you could cause damage. one can be used more generally, while the other can be used more precisely. But each flux has different properties, which make it suitable for different aspects, i.e. Flux actively removes oxides as you solder, preventing poorly soldered joints. This happens to almost all metals used in electronics. Oxides form when a metal is exposed to oxygen. Each have their own advantages, depending on personal preference and experience level.įlux is needed to remove oxides from the surface of a metal. Rosin is popular because it is easy to use, but liquid and easy clean flux are worthy alternatives. Generally, the less acidic a flux is, the less damage it is likely to cause to an electronic. Rosin,Liquid and Easy Clean Flux is generally used in electronics soldering. What Type of Flux is used in Electronics Soldering?

OneNote enjoys smooth integration with other Microsoft 365 apps, but Apple Notes provides a clean and reliable alternative for Apple users who need to capture and share business notes. Microsoft OneNote: Which is best for business? If you're invested in the ever-growing constellation of Microsoft cloud services, or if you use a Microsoft-heavy workflow at work or school, OneNote is certainly worth exploring - especially for the price.Apple Notes vs. OneNote is a good start as a Mac app from Microsoft. To that end, Evernote has a better fleshed-out ecosystem of apps, accessories and tools to help you get the most out of it. The 800 pound gorilla of the note taking app market is Evernote. It's weird to think of Microsoft as underdog, but they really are when it comes to this kind of app. As in all things, your mileage may vary in this regard. ![]() I don't have any experience with the Windows version of OneNote, but I've read numerous complaints from users of both versions that suggest the Mac version comes up a bit short, especially in areas like saving text formatting options, document and file importing and attachment and more. You can share notes with users outside your workflow by embedding the note in an email or by sending links Microsoft offers the option of a read-only link or an editable link as well. Late last year, Microsoft added the ability to open notebooks stored on SharePoint Servers, as well. You can embed PDFs after a fashion, as "printouts" that can then be annotated. Unlike Evernote, OneNote doesn't have any easy way of embedding web pages into your notes, which makes it a less-than-ideal tool for collecting info off the web for later collation and digestion. It's no replacement for Excel, but it's good enough to get some basic tabulation work done if you need to. You can embed images and you can also create tables that can include some basic calculations. OneNote sports myriad formatting features to make your text look however you'd like it to, as well. You can create subpages and sub-sections, reorganizing your notes however you'd like. |
